Muscat Golf Courses team up for dual Summer Open
As part of the ongoing efforts to promote golf in the Sultanate, Almouj Golf and Muscat Hills recently combined efforts to host the inaugural dual Summer Open, a two-day open tournament for all golfers in Oman. Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club was played on day one and Almouj Golf on day 2. Visitors and members competeted over the two championship courses during the warm summer months.
Golfers competed over 36 holes played in the Stableford format. The first round was played at Muscat Hills and the second at Almouj Golf. In an encouraging sign for Omani golf, 14 golfers from a field of 48 made the trip from Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf Club to participate in the competition, each group accompanied by a professional from their respective club.
Play on day one at Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club saw Almouj Golf member Yvonne Welling head the leaderboard with a score of 41 points. Following close on the heels was Almouj Golf Men's Captain William Welsh with 37 points. Other notable Stableford scores on the day were posted by the Dubai visitors Allan Stanton, Neil Taylor and Rashid Ali, who scored 36, 35 and 34 respectively. The day's on-course competitions saw Tom Metzger and Louise Daly win the longest drive competitions on the 5th hole and Neil Taylor and Yvonne Welling take the nearest the pin prizes on the 12th hole.
In the on-course competitions, William Welsh and Catherine Shackleton took the longest drive prizes on the 7th and 16th holes respectively and nearest the pin titles were claimed on the 17th by Dalip Tripathi and on the 2nd by Louise Daly. Excluding those who finished in the top three positions, Nasaruddin Mohammed held the best score for Day two with 32 points, just ahead of Ahmed Kamel Mahmud by virtue of a back 9 countback.
